INFORMATION FOR THE INTRA-FORUM CONTEST#6:
OBJECTIVE:
This is a contest of covers, songs that have been popularized by other artists in the past, in your own interpretation. Obviously performance and interpretation will be one of the deciding factors in such a contest. Quality of recording should not influence too much the outcome, though.
For starters, I should have called this a festival rather than a contest. I see this mainly as a showcase of musicianship. Perhaps instead of rankings and marks we will just have critiques. Whatever, this is really not important at this point. This can be collectively decided.
I will announce when the submissions can start, once I get an indication from the participants that they are ready to upload (and once I finish setting it all up). I espect to finish setting up by Sunday, October 19th. I estimate everybody should be ready to start uploading by the middle of November.
THE MECHANICS:
Since official web sites dedicated to music such as mp3.com and www.acidplanet.com will not allow covers to be posted due to copyright infringement, I will set up a private site where everybody's recordings can be uploaded easily using an FTP program. If you don't have one of your own, I have information on how to download and use a free one, WS_FTP LE, right here. In fact this shows you what to set up regardless of the particular FTP program you use.
Before you can upload to my site, I will have to give you a password for the FTP program. I will do this by email, so you'd better send me your email address right here if you want to participate.
The song files will have to be encoded as lo-fi wma (Windows Media Audio) files at no more than 48kbps, so that the resulting file can stay under 1MB of size. The reason is two-fold: 1) I don't want to overload my web space and bandwidth; 2) streaming is faster especially for dial-up connections. In addition, there is not a great deal of loss of quality, especially if the original recording is a hi-fi wav file and also when pitted against the alternative which is extensive buffering of the file with its associated sputtering and infuriating stop-go behaviour. I have information on possibly the best available program for encoding to all sorts of formats, dBpowerAmp, right here.
NB: I WANT TO HAVE AT LEAST 8 PARTICIPANTS BEFORE I SET UP ANYTHING AT ALL!
...... AND WE DO!.....
